CODY_POSTER_MARCH

cody hudson's solo show opens in chicago next friday, the 27th. your life will be better for having attended. as if that wasn't enough, corey arnold is showing with him.

also, mr. so-hot-right-now-himself, alan del rio ortiz, interviewed john lurie for the most recent stop smiling. i think that was the last piece i had anything to do with over there before i bounced from that spot. a portion of the interview is online here. you should read it because it is awesome. if all you know of him is the lounge lizards or jarmusch films, read up on him. impressive citizen of the world, that guy.

David Byrne & Brian Eno - Strange Overtones (corny? yes. awesome? yes.)

if you haven't spent time on this site by now, i strongly recommend it. dude samples, and then cuts and pastes youtube clips together to make his own compositions. go to "i'm new", and then skip to 4:35. is it weird that the last part of that video moved me more than anything else i've heard this year? answer: no. when you have people that actually think it's ok to name your band this, you know shit is kinda effed. or maybe it's just that, by definition - according to the source material and how it was sourced (click on "credits" on the site) - there's a sense of honesty to it that seldom comes through in music. a kid (who, according to his youtube profile, likes baseball and dance dance revolution in addition to classical piano) playing one of chopin's nocturnes, a snippet from bach on a violin, and a girl singing into a shitty webcam becomes this amazing refrain that has been stuck in my head for days, not to mention the ramifications of the medium: the nature of sampling has always been to try and make the finished product something way greater than the sum of its parts, and because i see it happening so rarely these days, it's that much more impressive to me when it actually goes down that way.

also, big shout to big brother.

The Heliocentrics & Mulatu Astatke - Phantom of the Panter (go buy this album right now, thank me with hot dougs coupons)

and finally, logan and i did a quick mix for our post-valentines day party this year, pressed up some fancy CDs, but in case you missed it, here's one of the mixes i did on the CD. kinda all over the place, i did it live in one take, just some valentine's type shit. tracklisting here

remember that body farm video i was talking about? well it's up in 3 parts at VBS, also at this new weird dell site, and also on youtube, if you care to see it. i produced it with alix and alan shot it with some extra horrible camera work by me and i snapped all the stills except for the black and white joints i think.

pieces of a dream.

Question-mark

i know i've been gone a while. down but not out, yo. all new blog / site / store with fine works of art, wonderful pieces of music, random musings on life, maybe even a book or two, a dvd to watch, objects to drink things out of, things to make other things with, tools for a healthier mental state. all of this and more is coming soon. big things always start small, yo.

until then, you can play this

time wasters du jour: list universe & phobia list. some of the names of these phobias kill me. like why call the fear of long words sesquipedalophobia? if people are scared of them, wouldn't you call that fear something shorter than 8 syllables? that sounds like the DSM dudes eating pot brownies and making fun of us.

also, if you can't afford one of these jammies to clean your records, dudes over here hooked up the proper cleaning guide.
